Nathan is bisexual and was experiencing psychological abuse in the family home.

He approached akt as he needed support to leave. As Nathan was under 18, akt supported him to approach the local authority for assessment under section 20 of the Children’s Act 2005. Initially the local authority would not accept an accommodation need. akt supported Nathan further by placing him in one of our host homes whilst challenging the local authority’s decision. When akt’s challenge was eventually successful, Nathan was given ‘looked after’ status and Nathan requested to stay in the host home as he felt comfortable and safe with the hosts. The local authority agreed to fund the placement and Nathan has now been supported to return to education and is looking forward to working towards independent living.

We believe no young person should have to choose between a safe home and being who they are. If you'd like to support our work with young LGBTQ+ people facing or experiencing homelessness, click here.
