Black LGBTQ+ people have always been an intrinsic part of the UK's culture and history, but their contribution to society is often overlooked or ignored altogether. Throughout October, we'll be shining a light on Black LGBTQ+ icons from history up to today on our social media channels and raising awareness of the issues still affecting Black LGBTQ+ young people when accessing services and housing. We'll also be hosting a healing circle with our Black LGBTQ+ service users, and an informative  session about the month.

While Black History Month is a time of celebration, it's also important to look at the intersections of housing, LGBTQ+ identities and race, and raise awareness of the issues affecting Black young people trying to access safe housing.

Young black men in london are 19 times more likely to be stopped and searched.

Stop and search disproportionately impacts young black men who are rough sleeping, often by forcing them to move along. This prevents them from receiving support from homelessness services, which are often based on current location.

63% of the young people we support are poc and 27% of the young people we support are black.

We know that anti-blackness creates barriers for the young people we support. Racism in the privately rented sector means that young black people are being unfairly dismissed from viewings or discriminated against on the basis of their surname. Many have to resort to using a ‘western’ surname just to get a response from estate agents.

If you're LGBTQ+ and struggling with accessing housing, or you're facing homelessness, we're here for you. Start a live chat with us or make a referral
